City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments Series, Book 1)

Going to the Pandemonium Club in New York City is normal for fifteen-year-old Clary Fray. That is until she witnesses a murder.  Done by three teens with tattoos and carrying brandishing bizarre weapons. Suddenly the body disappears into thin air.  Now, explaining this to the police is going to be hard. Especially when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and there is nothing to show that a boy has died. But was he really a boy?

Clary has just met the Shadowhunters. A group of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first time meeting with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks like an angel and acts like a total jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary’s mother disappears and she herself is attacked by a demon.  Now, she is being pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance. A vengeance to save her mother. The question is – why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? Also, how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? Everyone, including the Shadowhunters, would like to know…

Warning: Spoiler Alert

This book began my long love for Cassandra Clare’s books. This book had many things to love and hate.

The Good:
Creating a whole new world using fantasy. Love the introduction of Shadowhunters.
Loved the plot and story line.
I loved the writing style of Cassandra Clare.
Did not see the ‘Jace and Clary being siblings’ plot twist.
Loved how Clare interlinked the real world with fantasy.

The Bad:
Character development was average.
Clary’s character was really confusing.
Simon was a really weak character.
Jace was just annoying.
The whole ‘Simon becoming and rat and getting kidnapped by vampires’ was unnecessary. The book did not need it.

Overall:
The story line and writing was amazing. However, characters were horrible and needed major work.
I would recommend to fans of Twilight, Divergent and Hunger Games.
